AP: “Kirk spent holidays on reserve duty in Afghanistan”

January 12th, 2010

By Associated Press
CHICAGO (AP) — Republican Congressman Mark Kirk spent the holidays in Afghanistan on military duty, and he says he supports President Barack Obama’s decision to send more troops to that country.

Kirk talked Thursday about his more than two-week long trip to Afghanistan during an appearance at the Union League Club of Chicago. Kirk is an officer in the Naval Reserves and was in the county on active duty.

Kirk is one of the Republicans running in the Feb. 2 GOP primary for President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat.

Kirk says this year will be a good one for the military in Afghanistan. But he predicts it will take another four to five years for the mission there as military forces help to build up the Afghan army.
